Word Experienced an Error trying to Open a File

Sometimes, a user can experience an error when trying to open any attachment from within Outlook associated with an Office program, such as Word, Excel or PowerPoint.

Here at Acumen, one of our technicians found a resolution for this error:

  • Open the program associated with attachment.
  • Go to File > Options > Trust Center
  • Then, go to Trust Center Settings > Protected View > Disable ‘Enable Protected View for files originating from the Internet’
  • Click ‘OK.’

Be sure to close all dialog boxes and then the program. Then, try and open the file that was causing issues in Outlook again.
